The Skinny: Donnie Yen kicks ass but 14 Blades doesn't. Director Daniel Lee goes for style over substance, delivering an overlong film loaded with uninteresting drama and dialogue. Passably entertaining if you're in it only for the action, but a disappointment if you're not. Pick your side.

Review
by Kozo: Donnie Yen kicks acres of ass, but he can't make Daniel Lee into a better filmmaker. Back when he made Moonlight Express or A Fighter's Blues, Lee looked like a competent commercial director who sometimes employed style over substance. However, in recent years his style cup runneth over, with Dragon Squad and Three Kingdoms: Resurrection of the Dragon featuring flashy filmmaking but inadequate if nonexistent characters and emotions. 14 Blades follows suit, providing stylish action and amped-up art direction but not the emotions or characters that it should. That's not to say that a Shaw Brothers-influenced Ming Dynasty-era actioner like 14 Blades should aspire to Red Cliff-level accomplishment. However, the 14 Blades is surely trying to mean something, and that's where it fails.

Yen plays Qinglong, the head of the Jinyiwei, the Emperor's feared cadre of super-awesome assassins. The Jinyiwei are masters of the 14 Blades, a set of kickass weapons stored in a box that the Jinyiwei ferry around on their backs. Eight of the blades are meant for torture, five for killing, and the last reserved for an honorable suicide if the Jinyiwei member can't complete his mission. During the film, the audience gets an eyeful of each of these blades, not to mention the box’s neat-o grappling features – two hooks that shoot out from the box and allow the user to climb the walls like Batman. During these sequences, the camera zooms into the box using nifty CGI to show the wheels spinning and gears grinding inside. It’s all very cool and stylish, but also as necessary as Donnie Yen carrying weapons. After all, who needs weapons when you're Donnie Yen?

That digression aside, 14 Blades lacks convincing drama despite possessing obvious stakes. In the early going, the filmmakers tout the Jinyiwei brotherhood as a big deal, but they fail to back that up, choosing to develop the story in a robotic and uninteresting fashion. Qinglong is established as a badass but is quickly betrayed by evil eunuch Jia (Law Kar-Ying) and fellow Jinyiwei member Xuanwu (Singapore actor Qi Yuwu). Xuanwu helps kill a couple of righteous Jinyiwei members before leading the rest in a hunt for Qinglong - all supposedly shocking developments because Qinglong is Xuanwu's adopted brother. However, Xuanwu's betrayal is never emotionally convincing because the filmmakers never develop it. Ultimately, the two must face off but audience involvement or actual tension simply don't happen. Xuanwu becomes just another obstacle - one of many - for super badass Qinglong to overcome.

The film has a love story too. Vicki Zhao plays Qiao Hua, a member of a group that helps Qinglong escape from the now-corrupt Jinyiwei. Qiao Hua learns to love Qinglong, but after he kidnaps her and tells her father (Wu Ma) to spread misinformation on his whereabouts or he’ll leave her corpse in an inn somewhere. Fear not - Qinglong would never kill Qiao Hua because he’s super righteous, and really plans to steal back the Imperial Seal from Eunuch Jia, thereby restoring power to the Emperor and being the hero that he’s supposed to be. Qiao Hua ends up as his travelling companion, and recites long existential monologues about memory and truth in jiang hu. Or something. Actually, it’s hard to process what Vicki Zhao's speeches mean because she's usually droning on and on while Donnie Yen bathes or stares into space like he’s thinking about his next meal. Daniel Lee tries to mix emotion and action with 14 Blades, but he doesn't do a good job of it.

However, the action may be enough for the fans, as Donnie Yen has charisma to spare when smacking people around. One highlight is a fight between Yen and Shaw Brothers star Chen Kuan-Tai that employs various entertaining martial arts styles. When Yen takes on Kate Tsui, who plays evil female assassin Tou Tou, it becomes a weapons battle, with Qinglong’s box 'o blades versus Tou Tou’s flexible metal whips. The exaggerated weaponry is fun, and helps compensate for the filmmakers trying to sell the audience on a climactic duel between Donnie Yen and Kate Tsui. In previous films Yen would take on Collin Chou or Sammo Hung for the end battle, but here he’s going for a beatdown on a former Miss Hong Kong. Still, Tsui is a sexy villainess, and it’s nice to see a film that isn't reduced to some Donnie Yen simply owning some poor sucker in his final moments of asskicking. Thanks to the CGI, Tsui manages to hold her own.

The competent action sequences are the selling point here, because without them 14 Blades is overlong and a chore to get through. The drama is extremely routine, the special effects dodgy, and Yen's performance swings between only two emotions: angry and possibly bored. Vicki Zhao earnestly attempts to bring some emotion, but Daniel Lee hangs her out to dry, such that her long monologues and ardent expressions start to annoy. Fangirls can be happy about Taiwan heartthrob Wu Chun, whose Jack Sparrow get-up and bare navel should get those pulses racing. However, in the end, he’s just another commercial selling point in a film filled with them. As a product created for China box office and international sales, 14 Blades has its positives, and can kill time for anyone who's in it only for the action or Donnie Yen. But is it a good movie? No, not really, and ultimately proves as memorable as the mildly entertaining Empress and the Warriors. Luckily, Donnie Yen has Ip Man 2 coming up soon, which will probably provide the emotional context to go along with its likely spectacular action. 14 Blades has action, but doesn’t deliver on story or emotion, making it just a passable commercial film. If even that.

MA movie with a love story

9/10

This MA drove me into writing my first movie review in IMDb. Yet another one of Donnie Yen's best, I would say. Less meaningful impact than 'Ip Man' and 'Bodyguards and Assassins' in terms of overall storyline but for original ancient MA screenplay, this was a very good one. It's a martial art movie with a non-cheesy love story (I could remember The Myth for MA+cheesy love story).

Character developments were mainly focused on the protagonists (Donnie and Vicky), especially their attraction to each other. What I personally like most about this movie were their love story, creative martial art moves(as usual in most Donnie Yen's movie) and some comical relief from Donnie Yen. A much improved pairing since 'Painted Skin' where they both lack of connection to each other. Just like in recent movies, Donnie Yen never failed his viewers and this time gave even more, by showing off his tattooed six pack torso. And this was by far my favourite character from him, as the anti-hero Green Dragon on his deadly pursue for redemption. And not forgetting his 14 blades, even thought it's the title of the movie but not really the highlight throughout the movie, unlike 'Seven Swords'. Disappointingly, except that we knew the name and functionality of each blade, we never really see them in action, and when they did, I was not sure which blade was being used.

As for the nemesis acted by a promising young TVB star, Kate Tsui, personally I am not a fans of her, and I think she looks too young for a great assassin. I would prefer if they could cast some really talented martial art actor with convincing moves and not just some lifeless and 'pretty' stances from young stars, and heavily CG-ed MA move from Tuo Tuo, especially her disrobing move. Same goes to the other anti-hero Wu Chun's Judge. I did not recognize him instantly as I was not into Taiwan boyband scene but I know right away he is some sort of young model or prettyboy actor. A lot of cool and pretty pose from him but his character serves no purpose, well, maybe his character will earn my acknowledgement if he looked older and less prettyboy. Their acting skill? Don't expect much, just enjoy their costume and weapons, OK.

At the end of this movie, I feel that I will watch this movie again but just for Donnie Yen and Vicky Zhou.

I went to watch this movie because I support Donnie Yen's action flicks and I like the actors Sammo Hung, Zhao Wei and Wu Chun. The movie is about how the Ming Dynasty's Imperial Guards, also known as The Brocade Guards (due to the silk brocades they wore on the outside), was being used in a power struggle and Qing Long, the commander of the Imperial Guards, was being pursued because he was in the way of the usurpers.

Qing Long felt compelled to prevent the conspiracy, which involved an exiled prince who wanted to get the Imperial Seal to allow him to return to the Imperial Palace to usurp the throne. The Imperial Seal is historically real but was lost in the folds of history. Qing Long, wounded in his failed attempt in one of his missions, decided to hire the services of an armed escort house known as Justice Escorts, in which acted by Zhao Wei was the daughter of the escort chief. The two of them ventured in the outer desert plains of China where the story would culminate into a series of deadly fights between Qing Long, Wu Zhun (who acted as a leader of some desert raider groups), Xuan Wu (acted by Qi Yingwu) and a mysterious and highly-skilled girl called Tuo Tuo (supposedly the adopted daughter of the exiled Prince).

The movie was quite alright since I was looking for some kungfu action from Donnie who managed to deliver despite the fact that he had to lug some heavy-looking box containing fourteen blades used to torture and kill enemies. There were some comical scenes in the show which lightened up the relatively morbid story about how Qing Long had to recover his dignity as an Imperial Guard because of all the treachery and betrayal. Wu Zhun was not much of an actor but at least he looked the part of the charismatic desert raider who bravely fought the mysterious female pugilist. The final scene was about how Qing Long had to face off the female pugilist who was incredibly powerful and the movie ended with a narrative of Zhao Wei recollecting the finer moments of the movie.

I would advise my blog readers not to hold their breath for any good acting close enough to the movie Bodyguards and Assassins but the action scenes were definitely impressive enough to keep my ticket value worthwhile. Zhao Wei was probably the one shouldering most of the heavy acting since almost none of the male leads could act well given their rather stony expressions and rigid body language. I took in more of the beautiful scenery but I lamented the lack of any character development of the main villain, Tuo Tuo, who seemed to only provide pugilistic scenes with too little acting to be connected well.

Exceeds expectation

This genre usually gives rise to somewhat standard expectations, with great action as the top, if not the only, priority. This is particularly so in the case when you have the best, Donnie Yen. And yet, while Yan has never let his loyal followers down, including this time, the climatic duel in this movie is with Kate Tsui (as Tuo Tuo, a deadly Amazon and a daughter of an ambitious warlord), generally recognized as the most promising in the talent department among the crop of young actresses, but not by any stretch of imagination an action star remotely in the league of Yen. Top-notch action direction and earnest effort on the part of the young lady helps, but this is clearly not one of the "exceeds expectation" items in my summary line. But then, almost everything else is.

With the proliferation of martial art action movies in recent years, you need to have new selling points to make a movie of this genre stand out. This one has not just one, but a few. The title devise, the 14 blades, is one. As explained at the very beginning (so don't be late), the arsenals of the Jin Yi Wei ("glamorously apparelled guards" - see below) comprises various gadgets stored in a box not unlike one in which you carry roses on Valentine's Day. The content, however, is like something that Batman would have commissioned Q to design (had he been acquainted with the gentleman). Be rest assured that these gadgets have ample opportunities to entertain your throughout the movie. Tuo Tuo's arsenal is another. Her weapon is a crossover of a whip and a blade, and wickedly clever camera work makes sure that she wields it with equally deadly efficiency. True, this is more like the ultra cool poses that Johnny To used for pistols in his classic "The mission" (1999 – "Cheung Fo"), but it's just as fun to watch. But topping even that is her layered silk-like garments that she sheds, right in the middle of a fight, as decoys to distract weapons as she circles her opponents like a whirlwind. And she completes the circle by slipping back into these layers of her garments, by which time the opponent is usually dead with his throat slashed. If that is not exotic, I don't know what is. One further addition of these exotic collections is bandit-turned-Robin-Hood, desert bandit chief Judge's joined curved blades that looks like a propeller and works like a boomerang. You can imagine how highly entertaining it is to watch a duel between any pair of these three (and you'll see them all). By the way, I've got to say this: I'm almost certain that the director wrote to Johnny Depp to borrow his costumes from "Pirates of the Caribbean" for his character Judge.

Still on the "hardware" aspects of the movie, the exotic set pieces and desert landscape are something that you may perhaps see in similar movies, but not as meticulously designed and beautifully shot. On the "software" side, there is a serviceable plot, essentially surrounding an imperial seal which will cause tragic bloodsheds if fell into the hands of an ambitious warlord. The middle section of the movie on the chase and hunt, tracking and dodging looks very much like a retro western, and is equally enjoyable.

The woe of the Jin Yi Wei is well depicted: imperial effective killing machines recruited from orphans, following orders without any moral qualms. Donnie, whose acting ability is beginning to catch up with his top-notch action skills, portrays such a one, who finds himself in an agonizing dilemma when his conscience is awaken. Lovely Vicki Zhao is perfect as the determined daughter trying to be the son of a father whose business of express delivery of treasured items is declining. The movie takes attentive pain if developing these two main characters and the romance between them. It pays off as a convincing story, with due credit to good acting from Yan and Zhao.

All told, this movie offers exciting action, rich details, interesting characters and appealing visuals and, something that I haven't mentioned, excellent sound editing and mixing. Can't remember in my recent cinematic experience of this genre that has quite kept my attention continuously for 2 full hours.

There's no happy ending to the movie "14 Blades" I just watched, but the action was worthwhile. There was a main attraction other than the fighting and that was the wine merchant's daughter. I already forgot her film name, but I had a search for her real name "Zhao Wei". It's not the first time I've seen her in movies. I've also grown to like her because she's pretty cute.

Zhao Wei is a few years older than me, but still looking young. She doesn't really show any form of martial arts in the film. Playing as a beautiful lady who just happens to get mixed into a man's mission. She also has an English name which I believe is Vicki.

There's almost a mysterious story behind everything that went in this movie especially with the Prince's adopted daughter. Anyway, there's a little crying and a little romance. Only just a glimpse as most of the screen time was death.

Watch this if you liked: "Bodyguards And Assassins", "Treasure Hunter"

If you haven't had enough of Donnie Yen in "Bodyguards And Assassins", he is back with another martial arts movie - "14 Blades". With his involvement, the movie will never be lacking in kungfu awe. Some of his trademark hand-to-hand combat are featured here, together with traces of traditional wuxia moves. The "spinning coin" fight scene between Donnie and Wu Chun is a highlight, as no stunt doubles were apparently involved. Even Kate Tsui has plenty of work to do as the ultimate opponent for Donnie in the flick. As most of Donnie Yen's co-stars are not trained exponents, expect to see some fast editing techniques and close up camerawork to make up for the realism.

This movie also has a bit of romance. You will be seeing the gentler side of Donnie Yen, as he claims that this is the first time he is actually "in love" for a movie. The relationship with Zhao Wei slowly blooms throughout some lighthearted scenes. Look out for scenes by the river, the bath house, and also the Zhao Wei rescue scene from Kate Tsui.

Back on the action, we'll tell you about the notable weaponry used. They are specially designed by no other than the director himself, Daniel Lee. A special agent like James Bond has his secret gadgets, so does Donnie Yen in this movie! It is a special box containing 14 blades. Wu Chun's sword is sickle-shaped and can be transformed to a boomerang-looking double bladed sword. Also, Kate Tsui's quick whip has some serpentine qualities, and it can also be turned into a sword that readily plunges right through human skin.

For Wu Chun fans out there, the Mandarin version (available at select cinemas and territories) will feature his real voice instead of Cantonese dubbing. Do look out for the scenes where he shouts: "Here comes the Sky Eagle", as it is funny, what with his not-so-accurate pronunciation, as noted by critics. Instead of the usual prince charming roles, Wu Chun is here transformed into The Judge, leader of the desert bandits, with an appearance curiously similar to Jack Sparrows from the "Pirates Of The Caribbean" movies. His acting has surprisingly improved, compared to his previous "Butterfly Lovers". Be impressed with the stunts as he fought much harder in this one, outdoing his amateurish earlier movie by leaps and bounds.

In a decidedly well-marketed, female-skewed offering, the men in "14 Blades" are much sexier compared to the ladies. You will get too see yet another shot at Donnie Yen's tattooed chest at the beginning and also a memorable scene in the bath house. If this is not enough, Wu Chun also exhibits his hot, tanned and countable block of abs to the delight of his female fans.

Perhaps the only complaints you will hear about "14 Blades" are the wide-angle CGI scenes of the exotic city which turned out rather unrealistic. Other than that, "14 Blades" sits comfortably among other Chinese New Year releases as a very decent watch.

OUR LOVE
